Double Standards

First of all, let me start off by saying “Congratulations”. Congratulations to the Florida Gators and Christianity’s favorite football player, Tim Tebow. Not Many players can say they won two national championships, a Heisman Trophy (arguably could have won two), all while feeding every single child in the entire world. And not only that, he’s coming back for his senior season. That means he could add a third national title, a second Heisman, and start a cult called the Teboners. Not bad for a twenty-two year old.

Now that all that good stuff is out of the way, let’s get a little saucier. Watching the game last Thursday, something bothered me about Tim Tebow. I never get tired of hearing about how Tebow talks to prisoners. I never get tired of hearing about how Tebow helps impoverished children. So what if we’ve been hearing the same stories for about two years now. Chances are I’ll be reading bed-time stories to my children about how the great Tim Tebow saved a little Asian baby from the jaws of a rabid panda. All while disarming a nuclear bomb.

But the real thing that irks me about Mr. Tebow, is how he doesn’t get called for unsportsmanlike penalties. You see, at the beginning of the game, Louis Murphy (I think) caught a first down pass. He made a few shimmies, signaled for a first down, and drew a penalty flag. “Silly penalty”, says one of the announcers. Fast forward a few quarters later. Tebow snowplow his way to a first down, jumps up, and proceeds to yell at no one in particular, almost swings his arms right off his body pumping up the crowd …. and draws no penalty. “What amazing passion”, states the announcer. He gets away with these shenanigans every game. How it’s never called is a shock to me, especially after some of the unsportsmanlike calls we’ve seen this year (Washington Huskies, anyone?). Yes, I know he got called for a penalty at the end of the game, but that one could not have gone uncalled. It was just too blatant of a penalty. If he hadn’t been called for that, I guarantee you Stephen A. Smith or Scoop Jackson would be on a plane to Gainesville that night to talk about how Tim Tebow gets away with things because he’s white and goes to church on Sundays. In fact, I have a new Tebowism: If you go absolutely insane, yell at the crowd, and show up the defense after every first down, and you get called for a penalty, then you’re not Tim Tebow.

I’m not exactly claiming it to be a white and black thing, though I’m not NOT claiming it to be a black and white thing. The point is, Tim Tebow gets treated differently because the media likes to give him fellatio. I just don’t think it’s right. For those who will call me a Gator Hater, know that I wore a UF t-shirt on Thursday. Know that I was glad to see UF win. At the same time, I can’t wait until photos surface on the internet of Tim Tebow blowing lines off a table while dangling his dice on some cheerleader’s forehead. Then maybe he’d get called for a penalty or two.
